On December 26, 2021, the School of Statistics and Management held the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics 2021 Statistics Discipline Construction Seminar in the form of an online meeting. Thirty-three renowned statisticians from universities across the country attended the seminar, including Academician Chen Songqi, Professor Guo Jianhua, the convener of the State Council Subject Evaluation Group, Professor Wang Xiaojun, as well as external experts such as former deans Professor Ai Chunrong and Professor Zhou Yong, who gathered online to offer suggestions for the construction of the statistics discipline at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. Zhu Mingxiong, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and the administrative leadership team of the School of Statistics and Management also participated in the meeting. This seminar was organized by the School of Statistics and Management at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, with strong support from the Shanghai Data Science and Decision-Making Frontier Scientific Research Base.
The seminar was hosted by Professor Huang Tao, Assistant Dean of the School of Statistics and Management. Professor Zhu Mingxiong, Deputy Secretary of the University Party Committee, delivered a speech. Secretary Zhu stated that our university's statistics discipline is one of the early-established traditional advantageous disciplines. After more than 70 years of development, the statistics discipline has gradually grown stronger through continuous reform and innovation, with the discipline and programs successively included in the lists of world-class and national top construction. Looking back at history, we cannot rest on our past laurels; the future holds significant challenges. He hopes that all experts and scholars will unite, offer suggestions, and collaborate with Shanghai University of Finance and Economics to promote the healthy and long-term development of our statistics discipline in China.
Next, Professor Feng Xingdong, Dean of the School of Statistics and Management, reported on the development of the statistics discipline at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. After the report, experts commented on the construction and development of the statistics discipline at the university. In recent years, the School of Statistics and Management has made new breakthroughs in discipline construction, talent cultivation, faculty development, scientific research, and social services. The experts expressed their congratulations on the achievements the school has made over the years. Furthermore, to promote better development of the school and its disciplines, many experts also offered beneficial suggestions in various areas, such as the introduction and cultivation of leading talents, building distinctive teams, developing advantageous academic directions, and nurturing branded social services.
The new era and new environment have raised higher demands for traditional statistics, and the content of the statistics discipline must also keep pace with the times, continually updating to achieve substantial progress and sustainable development. To promote the further development of the statistics discipline at our university, the School of Statistics and Management at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics has convened this seminar on statistics discipline construction. After the seminar, the school will integrate expert opinions to explore new directions and reforms.
