The Department of Statistics at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics was established in 1946, making it one of the earliest institutions in China to establish a statistics discipline. In June 2009, it was renamed the School of Statistics and Management. In 1981, this department was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to become one of the first national master's degree granting points in statistics, and began to enroll graduate students in applied statistics that same year; in 1986, this department was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to become one of the first national doctoral degree granting points in statistics; in 1996, this department was again approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to become one of the first national postdoctoral research stations in statistics; in 1997, this department was recognized as a key discipline in statistics by the Ministry of Finance of the People's Republic of China.
