From July 15 to 16, 2016, the 2016 Collaborative Meeting and the Sixth Statistics Major Construction Forum of the Statistics Professional Collaborative Group of the China Higher Education Association's Division of Higher Finance and Economics Education was held at Lanzhou University of Finance and Economics. The meeting was hosted by the Statistics Professional Collaborative Group and organized by the School of Statistics of Lanzhou University of Finance and Economics. More than 60 heads from the statistics departments and statistics majors of 27 domestic universities, including Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, Capital University of Economics and Business, and Tianjin University of Finance and Economics, attended the meeting.
Our school is the chair unit of the Statistics Professional Collaborative Group. Vice Dean Wu Chunjie of our college attended the meeting and delivered a keynote report. In his report, he detailed the opportunities and challenges for the statistics profession in the era of big data, as well as the innovative reforms and practical experiences in talent cultivation at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.
In the era of "big data," the demand for statistical talent in society is becoming increasingly diverse. Our school's statistics program has entered the scope of first-class disciplines (Category A) in Shanghai. The college seizes the opportunity of the times and closely follows social demands, aiming to cultivate diversified innovative talents. It explores a talent training model that focuses on basic theory and practical ability while promoting talent qualities, initially forming a talent cultivation system with professional characteristics. Currently, the college conducts personalized and classified training, with the parallel class aimed at cultivating outstanding applied statistics talent in finance, while the statistics experimental class is designed to develop academically exceptional talents with solid foundational knowledge, deep expertise, and urgent societal needs. Relying on the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics undergraduate teaching project "Comprehensive Reform Pilot Project for Statistics Major" and the undergraduate teaching reform project "Innovation in Statistical Talent Cultivation Model Reform and Practice," the college vigorously innovates talent cultivation models, strengthens faculty development, and enhances curriculum and textbook construction. It further promotes reforms in teaching methods and teaching management, making significant progress in constructing academic platforms, achieving school-enterprise collaboration, building discipline competitions, and cultivating social practice abilities, receiving widespread acclaim from peer institutions and society.
During the conference, the participating representatives engaged in in-depth discussions and extensive exchanges on topics such as how the training of statistical talent in the context of big data meets social demands, the specifications of statistical talent cultivation, and the research on curriculum design. Vice Dean Wu Chunjie further shared the achievements of our college's statistical experimental class and pointed out that as an important component of the school's "Bingwen Program," a strategic initiative for cultivating top academic talent, the college will enhance the investment in human resources, material resources, and financial resources from multiple aspects such as student research projects, the undergraduate mentoring system, celebrity lecture series, and school-enterprise cooperation, in order to improve the academic capabilities of top talent.
