On May 29, 2018, the appointment ceremony for the fifth batch of industry part-time graduate student mentors was successfully held in the academic report hall of our college. The Executive Dean of the School of Statistics and Management, You Jinhong, Vice Dean Wu Chunjie, Director of the Applied Statistics Master's Program, Zhang Mingfang, Deputy Director Bai Yang, and newly appointed part-time graduate student mentors from industry including companies such as the National Technology Transfer Eastern Center Shanghai National University Technology Market Co., Ltd., Shanghai Paipaidai Financial Information Service Co., Ltd., Oriental Securities Co., Ltd., China CITIC Soft Technology Co., Ltd., Industrial Consumer Finance Co., Ltd., and Shanghai Guanxin Information Technology Co., Ltd. participated in the appointment ceremony. The master's students from the 2017 cohort of the Applied Statistics program also witnessed the ceremony, which was hosted by Teacher Bai Yang.
First, Professor Zhang Mingfang introduced the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics' School of Statistics and Management, as well as the collaborative training between the school and enterprises for the Master's program in Applied Statistics. The school currently has 40 full-time master's supervisors, and also boasts a well-distributed "dual-teacher" part-time supervisor team that aligns with the professional training needs. Today, the school has newly recruited elite professionals in big data technology to enhance the part-time supervisor team, focusing on the data science and business statistics specialization. To date, the part-time supervisor team has reached 77 members, among which 48 hold doctoral degrees, accounting for 62.3%. There are 23 overseas-returned PhDs, making up 48% of the doctoral count. Part-time supervisors play an important role in conducting practical teaching lectures and courses such as “Industry Forums” and “Case Analysis,” carrying out collaborative research projects, participating in student thesis guidance and defense, as well as providing students with internship opportunities and job placements. The Master's graduates in Applied Statistics cultivated through school-enterprise collaboration are widely favored in society, and the school expresses gratitude to the part-time mentors from the industry for their contributions to the training of talents in the Applied Statistics program.

Next, Yang Ming, a director of ZTE Soft Technology Co., Ltd. and an alumnus representative among the part-time mentors, spoke. He emphasized that now is the era of big data, and the ability to process vast amounts of data using computers is especially important. As students majoring in statistics, we must thoroughly understand the meaning of data, learn data analysis, and use data mining algorithms to create value from data. At the same time, Yang Ming expressed that part-time mentors should play an active role in talent development and give back to their alma mater.

Zhu Yefeng, the CTO of Shanghai Guanxin Information Technology Co., Ltd., spoke as a part-time mentor representative. Mr. Zhu explained to us the considerations that should be taken into account when handling data from a business understanding perspective. Data processing must be combined with the business context, and we must develop models that generate economic value based on a thorough understanding of the business logic. Zhu Yefeng stated that industry mentors will certainly fulfill their mentoring responsibilities and contribute their efforts to the School of Statistics and Management at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics!

At the meeting, Executive Dean You Jinhong and Vice Dean Wu Chunjie presented appointment letters to the newly hired part-time mentors and took a group photo.
