On June 16, 2019, the Second Statistical Modeling Competition of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics was successfully held at the School of Statistics and Management. This competition was jointly organized by the School of Statistics and Management and the Youth League Committee of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and was sponsored and supported by Shanghai Paipaidai Financial Information Service Co., Ltd. The judging panel, composed of Xu Longbing, Executive Vice Dean of the Graduate School, You Jinhong, Vice Dean of the School of Statistics and Management, Xu Guoxiang, Professor of the School of Statistics and Management, Han Dongmei, Vice Dean of the School of Information Management and Engineering, and industry experts, attended the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was hosted by Wu Chunjie, Vice Dean of the School of Statistics and Management.

The 2nd Statistical Modeling Competition of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics has received enthusiastic attention from many students since its preparation. After the announcement was made, hundreds of students from various colleges within the university participated. The expert review panel took 7 days to ultimately select 15 outstanding teams to advance to the finals.
At the beginning of the opening ceremony, Vice President Wu Chunjie introduced the guests and participating students to the preparations for the competition.

Next, Yuan Haiping, Deputy Secretary of the Youth League Committee of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, delivered a speech. Deputy Secretary Yuan Haiping stated that, based on his work experience, statistics has an inherent professional advantage in serving reality and has achieved a series of results in promoting innovation and entrepreneurship. He highlighted the recent achievements of our college's students who have frequently won awards in various competitions and praised the innovative service case of the "Data Clinic." He indicated that the statistical modeling competition promotes practice through competition and learning through competition, providing everyone with a very good opportunity. He hopes that everyone will enhance their sense of urgency in learning, strive to acquire scientific cultural knowledge and professional skills, work hard to improve their humanistic quality, gain knowledge through study, hone their character, enhance their abilities and skills through work, serve the people with true talent and practical learning, and contribute to the country through innovation and entrepreneurship.

Chen Lei, Vice President of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence at Shanghai Paipaidai Financial Information Service Co., Ltd., delivered a speech. He stated that this competition focuses on science, positions data, and closely aligns with reality. Through data science, it uncovers the value of data in practical business, allowing us to see the high integration of scientific academic value and industrial value. The competition provides a platform for students, enabling science to play its role in practical business, ultimately allowing us to recognize the value of talent: a group of vibrant, knowledgeable, responsible, and capable statisticians and data professionals. Since its inception, Paipaidai has maintained close ties with universities, having deep cooperation with Shanghai University of Finance and Economics in areas of talent cultivation and the implementation of academic achievements. He expressed that Paipaidai will continue to support the School of Statistics and Management at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, contributing to the transformation of the academic value of the faculty and students into industrial value.

After the opening ceremony, the final defense session of the Second Statistical Modeling Competition at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics officially began. The defense consisted of two sessions, morning and afternoon, with each group having a total of 20 minutes to present, including a 10-minute PPT presentation and 10 minutes for expert questions. After intense competition, the project "Research on the Urban Integration Issues of the New Generation of Migrant Workers from an Internet Perspective," created by a cross-college team from the School of Information Management, the School of Accounting, and the School of Economics, won the first prize. Additionally, 4 groups of students won the second prize, and 10 groups of students won the third prize.




To promote the innovation talent training mechanism of higher education institutions in Shanghai, build first-class undergraduate programs, and cultivate first-class talents, relying on the "Shanghai Leading Project for First-Class Undergraduate Talent Construction", with the aim of exploring "how to use data to meet actual business needs in the era of big data", the School of Statistics and Management and the Student Union jointly hold the Second Statistical Modeling Competition of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. The competition is a public thematic event on statistics and data science aimed at all undergraduate and graduate students in the university. Its purpose is to encourage students to propose solutions to practical problems in the era of big data, to solve real-world issues through techniques in statistics, mathematics, and computer science, and to enhance their abilities in data collection, organization, and analysis, while also selecting elite teams to participate in higher-level national competitions. The winning teams (members) can receive connections with companies, rewards, and internship opportunities, and may even have the chance to put their models into use and obtain patent rights.
