Same as statisticians, sharing the dream of statistics - Remembering the 2014 Master's students of Applied Statistics participating in the Shanghai Statistical Bureau's "Statistical Open Day"
On September 19, on the occasion of the fifth "China Statistical Day," the School of Statistics and Management at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics organized a visit for the 2014 master's cohort in Applied Statistics to the Shanghai Statistical Bureau for a lecture.
On the afternoon of the 19th, over sixty students from the Applied Statistics master's program, led by Vice Dean You Jinhong, Director of the Applied Statistics Master's Center Zhang Mingfang, and Class Teacher Zhou Xiaoping, arrived at the Shanghai Statistical Data Museum located in Xinzhuang, Shanghai. Under the guidance of the museum's staff, the students took turns visiting the Shanghai Statistical Exhibition Hall. Among the displays featuring modern statisticians, students saw information about Professor Jin Baoguo and Professor Chen Shanlin, who both worked at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics after the founding of the country. Their outstanding achievements and remarkable contributions to the history of statistics in China made the students proud to be members of the university, and even prouder to have chosen the field of statistics at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.
Through the visit, the students were able to gain a close and in-depth understanding of the various aspects of the history of statistics in Shanghai, and they also saw the important contributions of statistics to national management as well as its development prospects. Under the guidance of the lecturer, the students attentively watched, listened, and engaged hands-on with the electronic interactive platform to retrieve statistical information, intuitively understanding the process and outcomes of statistical work. The rich materials in the collection, along with the explanations of the history of statistics in Shanghai, touched the hearts of each student, making them deeply realize the responsibilities shouldered by statisticians.
After the visit, Qin Liping, Director of the General Office of the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Statistics and Director of the Shanghai Institute of Statistical Science Application Research, Feng Yaojun, Director of the General Office of the Shanghai Investigation Corps of the National Bureau of Statistics, and You Jinhong, Vice President of our institute, held a book exchange ceremony and made speeches in the conference hall on the fourth floor. The statistical yearbooks and the latest data survey research results provided by the Shanghai Bureau of Statistics have offered new materials for the study and research of our faculty and students. At the same time, our institute also presented its recent academic research achievements to the Shanghai Bureau of Statistics, providing theoretical and methodological guidance for their future practical work, further deepening the cooperation between government and academia.
Finally, Liu Hui from the Shanghai Statistical Bureau invited to give a lecture titled "The Application of Big Data in CPI Statistics" to the students. Drawing on her rich experience in survey statistics, Liu Hui vividly introduced what CPI statistics are and illustrated the new application prospects brought by the era of big data to CPI statistics, using the price index of JD.com as an example. This lecture provided the students with new ideas, inspiration, and dreams for dealing with big data in the future.
The "Statistics Open Day" event not only broadened the students' horizons but also enriched their extracurricular life, greatly benefiting their future studies and employment.
