The School of Statistics and Management has completed the expert visit for the review and evaluation of undergraduate teaching work.

According to the Ministry of Education's "Notice on Conducting the Review and Evaluation of Undergraduate Teaching Work in General Higher Education Institutions," Shanghai University of Finance and Economics launched the self-evaluation work for undergraduate teaching review and evaluation in March 2017. From October 29 to 31, 2018, the expert group of the Ministry of Education conducted an on-site investigation at the university.

On October 30, the undergraduate teaching work review and evaluation of our college was held in the college conference room. Professor Shi Daimin, a review and evaluation expert from the Ministry of Education and Vice President of Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, visited our college. The college's party and administrative leaders, discipline leaders, department heads, faculty representatives, and internal expert liaisons attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by our college's Vice Dean You Jinhong.



At the beginning of the meeting, Vice Dean You Jinhong expressed welcome and gratitude on behalf of all faculty and students for Professor Shi Daimin's arrival, and earnestly requested Professor Shi to provide guidance on the college's undergraduate teaching work after evaluating the teaching activities.


Subsequently, Vice Dean Wu Chunjie reported on the undergraduate teaching situation on behalf of the college. Starting from the positioning of the educational institution and the training objectives, Vice Dean Wu provided a detailed introduction to the basic teaching overview of the School of Statistics and Management from six aspects: faculty team, teaching resources, training process, student development, quality assurance, and special projects. Under the planning of the first-class discipline program, our college adheres to the concept of "prioritizing ethics, emphasizing fundamentals, focusing on capability, and applying practically," aiming to cultivate high-quality statistical talents with innovative awareness and practical abilities, as well as professional talents with a strong sense of social responsibility at different levels and with different characteristics to meet the needs of social development. While strengthening teaching and research, the college continuously promotes teaching reform, complementing classroom teaching with practical education, achieving outstanding results in both further education and employment. In recent years, the college has actively promoted reforms in cultivating top talents while implementing innovative systems for experimental class construction, and at the same time seized good opportunities for school-enterprise collaboration, creating new platforms for innovative education, thus forming its own unique characteristics.



After the report, the highly praised young teacher Wu Mengyun and the student Wang Dongyue, who has received the recommendation qualification from Peking University, shared their teaching experiences and learning experiences based on their personal growth journeys.


At the meeting, Professor Xu Guoxiang, Professor Zhang Mingfang, Professor Feng Xingdong, Professor Chang Ning, and Secretary Xue Liang spoke in turn, discussing the opportunities and challenges faced by the college in various aspects of discipline construction.


Professor Shi Daimin, after listening to the report and reviewing the evaluation materials, provided opinions and suggestions regarding the undergraduate teaching work of our college. He stated that the Statistics Department at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics has significant influence in the international statistics community. In recent years, it has not only inherited its traditions but has also developed rapidly and well in various aspects such as discipline construction, talent cultivation, and scientific research, demonstrating foresight in interdisciplinary fields. He emphasized that universities should return to their roots and focus on talent cultivation, insisting on "taking the fundamentals as the basis" to strengthen undergraduate teaching. He suggested that establishing a statistics discipline at a finance university must be distinctive. Currently, the development of mathematical statistics in the college is rapid, but there seems to be a shrinkage in economic statistics and financial statistics. He recommended that the faculty team should continue to strengthen, advancing in multiple fields and directions simultaneously, and not only focus on the growth of mathematical statistics and applied statistics but also pay attention to the traditionally strong disciplines such as economic statistics and new disciplines like data science, thereby better showcasing the distinctive financial characteristics of the university.



After the meeting, Professor Shi Daimin, accompanied by the leadership of our institute, visited the statistics teaching laboratory, the high-speed simulation computing center, and the doctoral student office. In the doctoral student office, he inquired about the students' study conditions and encouraged everyone to master their professional knowledge and become useful talents for society.


Finally, Professor Shi stated that he would carefully review the evaluation report and related materials, and then provide specific feedback to our college. The undergraduate teaching work evaluation and assessment received great attention from the college leadership, with full cooperation from the entire faculty to ensure the successful completion of this evaluation. The evaluation and assessment is a new evaluation model proposed under the new circumstances of higher education in our country, with the core focus on evaluating the realization of the school's talent cultivation goals and their effectiveness. The evaluation is primarily based on the talent cultivation goals set by the participating schools themselves, to assess the achievement of these goals and their outcomes.
