As the summer heat diminishes and the autumn breeze brings relief, the School of Statistics and Management welcomes a new year of orientation season. Over 300 new undergraduate, master's, and PhD students arrive as expected, filled with anticipation for Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and we greet our new classmates with the utmost enthusiasm. The Student Affairs Team of the School of Statistics and Management carefully planned and prepared to successfully carry out the 2023 orientation activities.
On the morning of August 31, 2023, Principal Liu Yuanchun and several other school leaders visited the college building to understand and guide the orientation work. The school leaders took a group photo with volunteers, representatives of new students, and parents, warmly introducing the campus life of the Financial University to the students' parents, creating a very harmonious atmosphere.
On the evening of August 31, the Deputy Secretary of the College Party Committee, Teacher Wang Ti, the Director of the Student Work Office, Teacher Zhuang Mei, counselors Teacher Xiong Jufeng, Teacher Cao Xinyi, Teacher Qu Lintong, along with members of the Student Union and the Student Council Presidium, walked into the freshmen dormitory to visit the new students, inquiring about and addressing the confusion they encountered upon starting school.
On September 3, 2023, at 2:00 PM, the opening ceremony and freshman orientation for the 2023 cohort of the School of Statistics and Management was grandly held in the first-floor lecture hall of the Administrative Building at the Guoding Road campus. Leaders from the college party and administration, teacher representatives, senior student representatives, and all new students attended the meeting, which was hosted by Wang Ti, the deputy secretary of the college party committee.
The Party Secretary of the College, Yang Hui, expressed warm congratulations and welcomed all the new students of the 2023 class on behalf of all the faculty and students. He has three hopes: First, to have grand ambitions and uphold the school motto of "Cultivating Virtue and Broad Knowledge, and Contributing to the Economy"; Second, to cultivate an international perspective and break free from traditional constraints; Third, to remain grounded and never forget to gaze at the stars. Dean Feng Xingdong introduced the long history of development, strong faculty, comprehensive teaching support, and innovative training programs of the School of Statistics and Management at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, with the topic "Exploring the Sea of Numbers: Experiencing the Charm of Statistics and Data Science." He hopes that everyone can avoid various risks and overcome various difficulties in their future studies and work. Subsequently, Vice Dean Huang Tao and Vice Dean Li Tao provided introductions on the graduate and undergraduate programs of the college, respectively.
Teacher representative Wu Mengyun expressed great recognition and appreciation for the students' choice of statistics, hoping that after making the right decision, they can study diligently and grow into useful talents. Student representative Yu Mengxi, a undergraduate student from the class of 2020, shared her personal experiences of learning and growth over the past four years. She encouraged the younger students to timely adjust their study methods and mindset to adapt to the pace of university life, and urged them to actively participate in campus activities to continuously enhance their abilities and qualities. Freshman representative Sun Rui from the class of 2023 talked about his three years of study and struggle in high school. He stated that he would continue to work hard, strive for self-improvement, and explore the vast world of statistics together with his classmates, encountering better classmates and a better version of himself.
In order to strengthen the daily education of group members and cooperate with the Party organization in the education and training of active Party members, under the unified arrangement of the School Youth League Committee of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, the Youth League Committee of the School of Statistics and Management specially invited school and college youth cadre and departmental organizers on September 12 and September 17 to conduct a specialized course titled "Youth Growth and Social Participation" for over 180 new and returning students. Through this group class, students gained a deeper understanding and appreciation of the responsibilities and obligations of youth in the new era.
Welcome season activities also include academic education and course selection guidance for new students, as well as a colorful welcome party to showcase the unique cultural atmosphere and spirit of the School of Statistics and Management. In addition, the college has arranged a series of activities such as an introduction to library resources, viewing the master play on school history "Sun Yefang," and a school history education tour of the school history museum to help students better integrate into campus life at the University of Finance.
Facing the new semester, the 2023 freshmen are filled with passion. They will carry forward the spirit of exploration and striving for excellence of the School of Statistics and Management of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. The college will provide each new student with a broad development platform and high-quality educational resources to support them in realizing their personal dreams. We believe that with the joint efforts of all faculty and students, the School of Statistics and Management of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics will surely write even more brilliant chapters in the future.
