On the afternoon of October 11, 2016, the School of Statistics and Management held an internal defense activity for the undergraduate evaluation of the Statistics major, the Economic Statistics major, and the Applied Statistics major.
The Statistics discipline at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics was established in 1946 and is one of the earliest departments set up at the university. As a traditional discipline with a long history and remarkable achievements, our statistics program has consistently maintained a leading position among similar programs nationwide, ranking fourth in the field, and has a complete talent cultivation system from undergraduate to doctoral levels. In 2013, the Ministry of Education adjusted the undergraduate major enrollment directory, and our college expanded from the original Statistics major to include two new majors: Economic Statistics and Applied Statistics, enrolling students for the first time. Under the careful nurturing and vigorous expansion by the university, these three majors have rapidly developed and have a strong faculty, cultivating a large number of innovative and versatile statistical talents for national and societal development.
On the afternoon of the 11th, according to the requirements of the Municipal Education Commission and arranged by the school, our college organized the internal defense work for the evaluation of three undergraduate programs in 2016. This evaluation work was chaired by Vice President Wu Chunjie, who invited Professor He Yuchang from our School of Economics, Professor Liang Zhi'an from the School of Mathematics, Vice Dean Zhang Riquan from the School of Statistics at East China Normal University, Director Wu Xianyi from the Statistics Department, and Dean Yang Tinggan from the School of Statistics and Mathematics at Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance to form the review panel. Professor He Yuchang, former Director of the Academic Affairs Office, served as the head of the review panel. Our Dean Zhou Yong also attended this internal defense meeting.

The meeting began with three professional leaders reporting on the conditions of their respective fields to the experts. The five review experts asked questions to the three professional leaders based on the brief profiles of each field, the evaluation reports, and the annual quality reports. The expert group fully recognized the teaching and research capabilities of the three programs at our institution. The review group leader, Director He Yuchang, praised our programs for having a mature foundation and for cultivating many innovative talents with outstanding achievements in the field of statistics. Meanwhile, the experts raised improvement suggestions regarding the normative issues present in the reports. In terms of the content of the reports, the experts pointed out that our materials related to student conditions, experimental teaching, evaluation of teaching, and other areas were insufficient and provided valuable suggestions for improvements in our future reports.
Based on the opinions of expert reviews, our college has taken the opportunity of evaluation for three majors, adhering to the principles of subjectivity, relevance, and empirical evidence. We fully leverage the primary role of the college in professional development, deeply researching core issues in professional construction and prominent issues in talent cultivation. We focus on key issues related to talent cultivation quality, such as the positioning of majors and talent training, and teachers' investment in teaching work. This internal evaluation is supported by the data of professional development, laying a foundation for the university's professional assessment.
