01 Attempt and Selection
Multithreading is the main theme of my freshman year, and as I shuttle back and forth between the Youth League Committee office, the Statistical Research Association, and my position as class monitor, I am undoubtedly busy, often rushing to various group meetings and activity sites. Being fulfilled and happy is the main theme at this moment, and I have also taken the opportunity to meet many outstanding senior students. The emphasis on cooperation and communication in student affairs has benefited me greatly. Handling affairs in an orderly, efficient, and punctual manner has gradually become a habit for me during my four years in college, where learning and student work are divided and managed. The energy of my freshman year seems to be unlimited. With two semesters of 28 and 29 credits filled, I completed my general elective courses early, giving myself a lot of space to choose many courses that interest me in the future.
After joining the statistical experimental class in my sophomore year, the sudden increase in course difficulty and academic pressure made me realize the need for some trade-offs. Besides retaining the position of head of the Youth League Committee Office, I gradually shifted my focus to academic studies. Looking back now, I am undoubtedly rational and lucky to have made such a choice. On the one hand, the small staff in the Youth League Committee Office gave me too many surprises and emotions. The ample positive feedback and unexpected team atmosphere still make me passionate and excited about student work; On the other hand, due to the early recognition of the idea of studying abroad, solid foundation, improving GPA, and preparing for English exams became a shuttle throughout the year. Because of my interest in data science, I took all the required courses in the data science class and continuously strengthened my coding skills.
The Cambridge Academic Summer Camp I participated in during my sophomore summer was undoubtedly exciting and thrilling for me as a newcomer to machine learning and artificial intelligence. In just three weeks, I learned theoretical courses from scratch, participated in Cambridge mentor group meetings, and completed mini academic research presentations. This is a brand new experience, although I am not someone who is good at theory, I am always passionate and full of ideas for practice and application.
For me, who aspires to study abroad, the whole year of my junior year has given me a clearer driving force. Improve GPA, prepare for GRE, and participate in internships. I have gained a lot from the combination of solid theoretical knowledge in the experimental class and practical application in the mathematics class. The distributed computing in my junior year allowed me to find a balance between statistical theory and code practice for the first time. Teacher Qiu Yixuan used witty and clear theoretical explanations, dismantled complex mechanical code programs, and solved many of my confusions and confusions in the past two years. The complex statistical formulas and derivations I learned in the past two years, as well as seemingly unnecessary limitations and proofs, all have their unique application value. Under the guidance of Professor Qiu, I began to read some literature, reproduce some small projects, and try to explore scientific research. Gradually, I began to feel interested in it.
02 Anxiety and Surprise
The entire senior year was spent in various emotional fluctuations during the application season. Internships, research, and everything else were prepared in a relatively conventional manner, but I fell into deep anxiety over the choice of school and application projects. For me, solid course offerings and abundant resources are what I value more, so I spent a long time carefully reading the details and courses of each project. Looking back at my choice of industry at that time, I was confused. The attributes of brokers, the Internet, statistics and data science were too flexible for me to determine the industry I wanted to go to. Now it seems that it would be more smooth if I could concentrate on a career path earlier, but it is not easy. Many times, it is undoubtedly just making some locally optimal choices, not far sighted.
The long application season didn't come to a complete end until April, and although I am naturally optimistic, I can't help but feel anxious. I am fortunate to have received a satisfactory offer at the final stage of making a decision, allowing me to delve deeper into my academic and research journey in the project that I most aspire to. The entire application season had some regrets, but it was mostly composed of gains and surprises.

Every time I express my gratitude, it makes it difficult for me to start writing. Over the past four years, there have been too many people who have helped me, both tangible and intangible, and I am afraid of missing out. Thank you to my parents who always support me unconditionally, thank you to the teachers who teach various courses, thank you to teachers Qiu Yixuan, Zhou Fan, and Zhao Haibing for their help and advice during the application season, thank you to the four counselors at 1107, thank you to my classmates and senior students who have been with me day and night over the past four years. You have made up my most beautiful memories of these four years.
I hope that younger students will boldly try and make mistakes in the future, and then walk each step of the way steadfastly. The relatively flexible nature of statistics provides us with diverse choices and ample room for trial and error.
