Unable to have smooth sailing, draw strength from setbacks
As a newly enrolled freshman, I maintained a high school ascetic learning style, constantly wandering through study rooms and libraries, studying and preparing for every course without discrimination. With the unchanging truth that hard work is rewarded by heaven, I achieved a high GPA that semester. However, at that time, I was too young, so I confidently chose a bunch of elective courses for the next semester, thinking that the number was similar to that of my freshman year, and consciously put in the effort to cope. In fact, after being ruthlessly reorganized by a pile of papers and exams at the end of the semester, coupled with some relaxation at home due to the epidemic, I finally managed to achieve the lowest GPA in my four-year undergraduate studies, which was astonishingly low.
On the day of the results, I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, with my mind full of how to start with a good hand and play until it was a mess. Although in fact, after the final exam, I could have a premonition that something was not going well. In short, after two or three days of painful reflection, I have decided to pick myself up, try to take the path of turning the tide, reform myself, and work hard. So I got up from bed and started studying at the library near my home, learning some mathematical modeling related knowledge and preparing for the September numerical modeling. Overall, learning new knowledge can indeed greatly alleviate anxiety and trigger the unchanging truth that hard work is rewarded by heaven, leading to the achievement of numerical model country one.
But winning awards in competitions also means facing the dilemma of a sharp drop in one's GPA ranking. Due to slackness and mistakes in course selection, I fell down once. In the following semesters, I dared not slack off in my studies and became more cautious in course selection. I no longer force myself to choose elective courses that everyone says give good grades, but instead choose courses that I am more interested in, and then perform more in class. Even if I suffer from social anxiety, I struggle to speak more and write more serious final papers.
After all, the underlying logic of taking elective courses and general courses with high GPA is essentially that you have invested and gained something. Just because people say this course is good, it doesn't mean they can get a good score just by choosing it. And I suggest not blindly believing in what is good for scoring, unless it is an economic literature search. Overall, whether the teacher gives good or bad grades, as long as you study seriously, you will have good results. The main thing is to learn some interesting and useful knowledge.
In short, after I collapsed in my freshman year, my entire sophomore year was a diligent and persevering state. At that time, I didn't really mention my grades in my freshman year, and I didn't even want to mention my grades in my freshman year. I want to silently continue writing the story of high opening and low falling, turning it into a bottoming out rebound. Now that the story has been continued, it can finally be opened without any psychological burden for everyone to read together.

You can roll back, but don't forget to work hard
Anti rolling is opposing meaningless internal competition and consumption, not opposing effort. In this era where everyone is shouting for a comeback, do not deny or doubt your own efforts, but clarify your fundamental goals and identify the direction of your efforts.
Starting from my sophomore year, in order to improve my GPA, I also wrote an elective course paper of over 4000 words. Although normally, I would have exhausted myself by the time I wrote 2000 words for such elective courses, I still tried my best to expand. This is a relatively standard test paper, and I didn't use endless ingenuity. I just wanted to make my paper longer and reach a medium to high level, so that the teacher could see my serious attitude and try to get better grades. However, the elective courses are slightly more comprehensive and seem to have been tested repeatedly. They are not strongly recommended and are only for reference.
But when it comes to studying professional courses, I later found that there is really nothing worth studying. Those meaningless efforts cannot bring much return on GPA, just pure effort and mastery of knowledge. The ideal state for studying professional courses is to be able to preview in advance, have a certain level of pre mastery and understanding of knowledge, and then follow the teacher's lectures in class to consolidate and deepen, as well as answer questions. In my personal opinion, the most rewarding experience is still during the review stage. Every time I review, I often feel a sense of enlightenment and transparency. The so-called "reviewing the old to learn the new" refers to having a relatively systematic understanding of the overall knowledge of the course, and gradually clarifying the origin and development of each knowledge point, as well as their connections and context, in order to have a more systematic and complete understanding of the course.
In addition to professional courses, there are also many platforms and opportunities to improve oneself, including participating in various subject competitions, modeling competitions, innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, etc. I am personally enthusiastic about participating in modeling competitions or projects. On the one hand, during the preparation process, I will self-study many models and methods. Although looking back now, what I self-taught at that time was relatively basic and not in-depth, I did some advanced learning in my lower grades, which can lay a cognitive foundation for future related course learning. From the application of regression theory, I can have a better understanding of the origins and development of some theories; On the other hand, every competition can serve as a project experience, a complete process of solving practical problems, which can help improve one's ability to analyze and solve problems, and also enrich one's resume. There is no need to be too obsessed with winning awards when participating in competitions. Always approach participation and experience with a learning and improvement mindset. Awards are just an additional joy beyond gaining knowledge and experience.
