In order to popularize the concepts and basic knowledge of statistical probability and enhance students' enthusiasm for learning statistics and probability theory, the Statistical Research Society held a themed academic salon on the evening of November 2, 2016; The Secret Behind the Gambling Game; Professors Wu Chunjie, Huang Tao, and Li Tao also attended to exchange ideas with their classmates.
At the beginning of the salon, everyone was pleasantly surprised to find that among the more than thirty students present, two of them were born on the same day and month. At this point, Professor Wu Chunjie began to analyze this phenomenon from a professional perspective in statistics. He proficiently used R language to build a model on site and found that there was a 70% chance that two out of thirty people had the same birthday, while among fifty people, the probability was as high as 97% Therefore, having classmates on the same birthday cannot be simply called fate, as it is a high probability event.
Next, the students were divided into five groups and played the game; Crazy dice” And“ Winning by 21 points; Under the guidance of the field controller, the game proceeded in an orderly manner. After the game ended, Professor Huang Tao took the initiative to recommend the movie "Qianlong Goes to Jiangnan" to his classmates, allowing them to understand the ancient dice gameplay; At the same time, it also explained to the classmates that in long-term gambling, the banker must win, and introduced the Kelly principle from shallow to deep; — We should invest capital based on the possible relationship between winning and losing, and encourage students to learn more about and expand Kelly's principles in different actual winning and losing scenarios.
After the game, the classmates expressed their thoughts and game tips. Teacher Li Tao summarized this salon and believed that students' learning should not be limited to books.
