---The Application of Natural Language Processing in Finance

On the afternoon of November 1, 2022, our institution invited Mr. Wang Zijian, a researcher at the Hong Kong Artificial Intelligence Financial Technology Laboratory, to give a lecture on the application of natural language processing in finance.

Professor Wang Zijian is a researcher at the Hong Kong Artificial Intelligence Financial Technology Laboratory/postdoctoral fellow at City University of Hong Kong, a PhD in Mathematical Statistics from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and a visiting scholar at the University of Kansas in the United States. Has received the National Scholarship for Doctoral Students and the Outstanding Youth League Cadre award from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. Published papers in authoritative journals such as "Chinese Science: Mathematics", "Chinese Management Science", and SSCI International Journals. My main research interests involve financial risk management, econometric models, machine learning, and natural language processing. In 2021, he joined the Hong Kong Artificial Intelligence Financial Technology Laboratory, engaged in financial text analysis, asset pricing, research and development of China bond rating model, news sentiment analysis, artificial intelligence report projects, etc.

At the beginning of the forum, Professor Wang Zijian first introduced the basic content of natural language processing and introduced its practical applications in the financial field. Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a field in computer science and computational linguistics that studies the interaction between human language and computers. Finance itself is a highly specialized field, and many words have special meanings in the financial context. All sub problems have a unique way of understanding, and the way in which the financial field measures and processes results is also different from other fields. For example, in terms of public opinion analysis, the financial sector requires a certain degree of foresight into the future trends of the market.

Afterwards, Professor Wang Zijian provided a detailed introduction to the specific research methods and achievements of natural language processing in the financial field, focusing on financial and economic news data, as well as regular and irregular report text data of listed companies. The teacher introduces the latest research progress in NLP, application achievements and development directions in the financial field from the perspectives of statistical models, machine learning and deep learning models.

During the questioning session, students actively and enthusiastically raised questions about the application and future development trends of NLP in the financial industry. Teacher Wang Zijian patiently answered each question, and the students also benefited greatly. Through this industry forum, students have gained a deeper understanding of the application of natural language processing in finance.
