On June 6, 2023, our institution invited Mr. Yin Huagang and Ms. Tao Yingying from PayPal to give lectures on "Using Numbers as Swords - Introduction to PayPal's Global Analytics and Data Science Department" and "Unlocking the Black Box of Risk Control - Introduction to PayPal's Global Strategy and Risk Control Department".
Professor Yin Huagang holds a PhD from the University of Science and Technology of China and is a Senior Manager in the Global Analytics and Data Science Department at PayPal. I have been responsible for risk management model solutions at PayPal. I have participated in and been responsible for PayPal's internal transaction risk models (such as account theft and card theft) and compliance risk models (such as anti money laundering). I am currently leading the team responsible for the seller risk model, hoping to use data science methods to reduce seller fraud losses while improving the user experience of customers' homes.
Teacher Yin first introduced the main responsibilities of the Global Analytics and Data Science Department, which is to support the work of risk control, product and marketing departments through modeling, data analysis, etc; Then it introduced the iterative process of PayPal's risk control model from the earliest simple logistic regression model to the neural network model with complex structure, and emphasized that the more complex the model, the better, and interpretability is also very important. Finally, Teacher Yin introduced PayPal's company culture and its thirst for machine learning engineer talent.
Teacher Tao Yingying holds a Master's degree in Mathematics from Tongji University and is a Senior Manager of Global Strategy and Risk Control at PayPal. PayPal is now responsible for global merchant risk strategy and global seller credit card service protection strategy, working together with the global model and product development team to help global merchants have a better experience and continuously find a better balance between customer experience and business growth.
Teacher Tao first introduced that the main responsibility of PayPal's global strategy and risk control department is to identify malicious users by establishing risk control strategies and models, focusing on the risk level of transaction users, and identifying the legality and compliance of transactions. Then Teacher Tao introduced the abilities that risk control talents need to possess. In addition to basic skills such as Python and SQL, they need to be familiar with the business, know where the growth points of the business are, and continuously pay attention to the latest machine learning models and technologies. In addition, Teacher Tao also introduced the company's working environment, very attractive benefits, and welcomed everyone to follow PayPal recruitment.
During the questioning session, students actively and enthusiastically spoke up, asking questions about the skills required for risk control talents and how the risk control department can identify black industries in business. Teacher Yin and Teacher Tao patiently provided answers, suggesting that students should have a growth mindset while mastering programming languages such as Python and SQL, and combine their knowledge with business. Through this industry forum, students have gained a more comprehensive understanding of PayPal and risk control positions.
