In order to further promote the construction of "first-class disciplines", deepen the training mode of academic top talents in our college, stimulate students' enthusiasm, initiative and creativity in learning, cultivate students' scientific research ability and innovative spirit, the School of Statistics and Management has established the "Academic Top Research Training Program" and opened a professional literature reading training module to broaden students' knowledge horizons and lay a foundation for subsequent scientific research training.
On the afternoon of March 26th, the second lecture of professional literature reading training was held in Conference Room 1208 of the School of Statistics and Management. This lecture is given by Professor Liu Xu. The lecture mainly includes introductions to authoritative academic journals in statistics, recommendations for literature search engines and databases, and sharing of professional literature reading methods, providing valuable guidance and suggestions for students' academic top-notch research training projects.
In the lecture, Professor Liu Xu first provided a detailed introduction to the authoritative academic journals in the field of statistics, including their impact factors, publication requirements, and review process, among other key information. He helps students gain a deeper understanding of the characteristics and positioning of different journals through vivid cases and easy to understand explanations, laying a solid foundation for their future academic publishing career. Teacher Liu also emphasized that students should first choose authoritative journals when reading papers, in order to obtain high-quality articles, understand journal styles, and learn writing methods for excellent articles.
Subsequently, Teacher Liu introduced multiple practical literature retrieval platforms and databases to the students, and explained how to efficiently utilize these tools to obtain the required academic resources. He encouraged students to actively use WeChat official account and other network resources to get in touch with cutting-edge research trends in advance and broaden their academic horizons.
Next, Teacher Liu focused on explaining the methods of reading professional literature. He emphasized that before reading literature, one should establish their own research questions and objectives, and select literature for targeted reading. At the same time, he also shared a series of practical reading skills, such as quickly browsing the literature, grasping the key points and essence of the literature, taking effective notes and abstracts, etc. Teacher Liu specifically pointed out that when reading literature, one should not only appreciate the contributions of others' articles, but also learn to discover their shortcomings and propose constructive improvement suggestions, based on which more in-depth research can be conducted.
At the end of the lecture, Teacher Liu encouraged the students to maintain perseverance when facing the challenges and difficulties of academic research. He mentioned that in the process of academic research, the vast majority of ideas may encounter failure, but it is these challenges and difficulties that shape the resilience of researchers and make them more aware of the importance of perseverance. I believe that under the guidance of teachers, students will be able to achieve even better academic results in their future careers.
This lecture was warmly welcomed and highly praised by the students. Everyone expressed that through Professor Liu Xu's explanation, they not only mastered more practical skills in professional literature reading and research, but also deeply felt the charm and challenges of academic research.

After attending Professor Liu Xu's professional literature reading lecture, I was deeply inspired. During the lecture, Teacher Liu not only recommended a series of top statistical journals, but also introduced important publications related to economics, econometrics, and machine learning. These resources are of great significance for me to gain a deeper understanding of the field knowledge and keep up with the latest research results.
Teacher Liu also emphasized the importance of literature review and search, guiding us on how to search for relevant literature through platforms such as Google Scholar and arXiv, and understand the working methods and research progress of other researchers in the field. In particular, the literature he provided on transfer learning applications in high-dimensional data, as well as research on how to improve the Lasso method, provided me with specific research directions and reading starting points.
Through this lecture, I learned how to systematically search and review literature, as well as how to effectively read and understand papers after determining research directions. This not only enhanced my research ability, but also sparked my passion for in-depth research in statistics and data science.
