Talent cultivation | The 2025 academic top-notch research training program of the School of Statistics and Data Science, including a series of lectures on professional literature reading, was successfully held

In order to further promote the construction of "first-class disciplines", deepen the training mode of academic top-notch talents in our college, stimulate students' enthusiasm, initiative and creativity in learning, cultivate students' scientific research ability and innovative spirit, the School of Statistics and Data Science has specially established the "Academic Top notch Scientific Research Training Program", and from 2024 onwards, will offer professional literature reading training modules to broaden students' knowledge horizons and lay the foundation for subsequent scientific research training.

From March to April 2025, the college held four specialized lectures on literature reading, and invited teachers Wu Shuyuan, Liu Xu, Luo Yhu, and Qiu Yixuan as keynote speakers. The lecture has rich content and diverse forms, greatly enhancing students' scientific research literacy, expanding academic horizons, and achieving significant results in talent cultivation.


Teacher Wu Shuyuan elaborated on the core methods of literature reading, emphasizing the screening strategy of "coarse reading - intensive reading". Rough reading can help students quickly grasp the main idea of an article, while intensive reading focuses on research methods, data processing, and conclusion sections, ultimately constructing a high-quality reference system. This method lays a solid foundation for students' literature search and research work, helping them efficiently filter valuable information from massive academic materials.

Teacher Liu Xu explains the entire process of scientific research, from topic selection, literature review, hypothesis formulation, method design, to data analysis and paper writing, gradually guiding students to construct a complete logical thinking framework for scientific research. Helping to cultivate students' ability to solve complex problems, enabling them to systematically think and advance scientific research projects, provides important thinking tools for future academic research or practical work.

Teacher Luo Yiyun shared her valuable experience and profound insights on the path of scientific research in a "heart to heart" communication style, encouraging students to maintain curiosity and perseverance, and bravely face difficulties and challenges in the scientific research process. This interactive communication not only solves students' confusion about scientific research, but also stimulates their enthusiasm for academic research and strengthens their determination to deeply cultivate in the field of statistics and data science.

Teacher Qiu Yixuan deeply analyzed the essential purpose of scientific research from a macro perspective, emphasizing that scientific research is not only the accumulation of knowledge, but also an important force in solving practical problems and promoting social progress. This has given students a deeper understanding of the value of scientific research, clarified their responsibilities and missions in the development of the discipline and social progress, and further stimulated their enthusiasm and initiative to engage in scientific research. ​

Through this series of lectures, students not only mastered basic literature search methods and read selected statistical literature, but also learned to use practical research tools. More importantly, the careful guidance of the teachers effectively helped students overcome their fear of scientific research, enhance their confidence in moving forward on the path of scientific research, and gain a clearer understanding of statistical research. These achievements will have a positive and profound impact on the future academic development and career planning of students, laying a solid foundation for the college to cultivate more outstanding talents in the fields of statistics and data science.

Student Reflections

Zhou Peiyuan: The literature reading lecture arranged by the college has left a lot of impression on me. It not only gave me a profound understanding of collecting and retrieving literature itself, but also gave me a clear understanding of the entire process of scientific research. Among them, the most impressive one for me was Professor Qiu's lecture. At the lecture, Teacher Qiu put into the perspective of the students and helped them solve their problems and doubts from their own angles. He pointed out that undergraduate research is more of a learning process. During this experience, we can intuitively understand what scientific research is and whether we enjoy it. It also allows me to calm down and think about what path I want to develop in the future and whether I really want to pursue academic research. Overall, this series of lectures not only enriched my understanding but also provided me with a clearer plan for my future.

Hou Zeying: In four academic literature reading lectures, the teacher brought us practical knowledge on literature reading methods and techniques, allowing me to understand the basic principles of literature reading. In addition, I also shared my personal research experience and practical software. The joy of scientific research is always short-lived, and being able to sit on the "cold bench" is the long-term solution. The sharing between Teacher Luo and Teacher Qiu has made me realize that scientific research requires perseverance, and finding one's own interests has a greater chance of lasting.

Hu Ruiqi: This series of lectures allows undergraduate students to also be exposed to scientific research, gradually developing an interest in cutting-edge statistical research from reading literature. Each teacher shared their understanding and thoughts on literature reading, especially Mr. Luo who also talked about his research process, which gave me a lot of inspiration. I am also working hard to cultivate the habit of reading authoritative journals, maintain my passion for scientific research, and apply the knowledge I have learned to top projects in the future.
