In order to further optimize the academic talent training system and strengthen the cultivation of students' scientific research and innovation abilities, the School of Statistics and Data Science continues to promote the in-depth development of undergraduate top-notch scientific research training programs. This year, the college focuses on academic frontiers and practical issues, organizing the 2023 Statistics Experimental Class students to conduct professional literature reading and project approval. On the morning of November 28, 2025, the mid-term defense of the project was held as scheduled in the 1114 lecture hall of the college building. As an important part of personalized scientific research training for undergraduate students in the college, this event invites teachers Han Miao, Zhou Huijuan, and Teng Jiaye from the college to serve as defense judges.

During the defense process, project leaders provided concise and clear statements on project background, research progress, method design, phased achievements, existing problems, and follow-up plans. The students' research topics closely align with the forefront of disciplinary development and practical application needs, covering multiple hot topics such as machine learning, high-dimensional data analysis, reinforcement learning financial applications, big model evaluation, medical and health statistics, and environmental data modeling. This fully demonstrates the solid mathematical foundation, interdisciplinary perspective, and innovative spirit of the 2023 experimental class students. The reviewing teacher listened carefully to the report and focused on questioning and commenting on the rationality of model construction, the rigor of data processing, the feasibility of method implementation, and the innovation of research. They also put forward specific and actionable improvement suggestions for the subsequent progress of each project. After review and deliberation, all 14 projects participating in the mid-term inspection have met the stage requirements and passed smoothly.

In the context of the digital age, carrying out top-notch scientific research training programs is an important measure for the college to promote the cultivation of digital literacy and strengthen the function of scientific research education. Mid term defense is not only a test of the preliminary work of the project, but also an assessment and improvement of the research direction. Through this defense, the students further clarified the problems and optimization paths in the research, effectively promoting the improvement of project quality and the standardization of scientific research practice, laying a solid foundation for the project to ultimately achieve high-level results.

Looking ahead to the future, the School of Statistics and Data Science will continue to improve the undergraduate training model of "solid foundation, strong practice, and emphasis on innovation", and deepen the integration of digital skills and statistical thinking. The college will continue to implement the undergraduate academic mentorship system, encourage and support students to participate in cutting-edge and interdisciplinary research projects, especially focusing on topics such as data science and artificial intelligence, and continue to build the top-notch research training program into a distinctive brand and bright business card for talent cultivation in the college.
