Career Workshop: Components of Personal Capability and Their Measurement Criteria
On April 21, our institute held a career workshop as part of the Career Planning Month series: "Elements of Personal Competence and Their Assessment Criteria." Instructor Yao Liming engaged in a series of discussions with students from different grades regarding the composition and enhancement of competencies, addressing their doubts and planning their university career paths.
First, everyone discussed the issue of which is more important: ability or educational background and grades. Teacher Yao cited examples such as Senior Xiong Tuo, who founded the Youth Concessions, and Senior Long Shuo, who completed her doctoral program, to illustrate that whether one has unusual experiences during university life or achieves excellent academic results, both are good outcomes and demonstrate ability. There is no distinction of importance between ability and educational background or grades; achievements and degrees are manifestations of ability, while ability is the foundation of accomplishments and degrees.
Regarding the definition of ability, Teacher Yao believes that ability is the subjective condition necessary for a person to complete a goal or task. Ability is manifested through certain behaviors and behavioral outcomes. For college students, this outcome is represented by academic performance and educational levels. Teacher Yao summarizes ability as three factors: knowledge and skills, basic judgment, and emotional support, and provides evidence based on the standards for evaluating talent from ancient to modern times, both domestically and internationally.
After that, everyone expressed their opinions on the issue of ability measurement criteria. Teacher Yao believes that compared to the degree and grades themselves, the process of obtaining these qualifications and results is more important. This process reflects whether a person has a basic judgment and strong emotional support. This subjective judgment and emotional support are the key to a person's ability.
Finally, everyone discussed the ways to gain abilities. Teacher Yao encouraged everyone to be a useful person, to do the things that need to be done well, and to do the things they want to do well! Teacher Yao urged all the students to cherish the platform of CAU for realizing their dreams, and not to lead a life of mediocrity, wasting time and life!
