In recent years, the construction of urban culture across the country has been in full swing, and the development and construction of the North Bund has also begun to gain momentum. On this new journey, the improvement of urban modernization levels is inseparable from cultural confidence, the inheritance and development of historical culture, and also requires the continuous innovation of urban cultural content and the ongoing enhancement of its connotation. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out: "The city is the people’s city; the people’s city is for the people." The cultural construction in the new era must be people-centered. In the cultural construction of the North Bund, how can we strengthen cultural confidence? How can we balance historical context and urban development? How can we meet the people's needs for a better life?
The research group composed of teachers and students from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, titled “Research on Cultural Construction in the North Bund - Discussing the Issues of Lane House Neighborhood Renewal in Shanghai,” has provided their suggestions on cultural construction and lane house renewal issues through solid field research, in-depth data mining, and diverse analysis, contributing their modest efforts to cultural heritage in the new era. Currently, this project has won the third prize in the internal selection competition of the 18th “Challenge Cup” National Undergraduate Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and has entered the Shanghai Finals.
Cultural Map: An Online Exploration of the Development of Urban Culture
From urban memory to diplomatic storms, from industrial memory to maritime arks, the research team conducted in-depth urban theoretical studies, which not only presented the long history and rich cultural heritage of the North Bund area, allowing people to gain a deep understanding of the historical evolution and cultural inheritance of this region, but also showcased the development direction and planning vision of the North Bund, guiding its sustainable development and promoting the prosperity and innovation of urban culture.
Data analysis, exploring the mysteries behind the updates in alley neighborhoods.
The research report indicates that the revitalization and update of old lane neighborhoods is an important pathway for inheriting the historical culture of this area. Over the past 20 years, the Shanghai municipal government has introduced various regulations, plans, and methods to establish a relatively complete mechanism for protection and utilization. However, there are still pain points in the updating of lane neighborhoods. In studying existing cases of lane neighborhood updates, project team members believe that "the protection and updating of lane neighborhoods have been quite effective, but how to tilt between commercialization and the protection of historical buildings requires us to explore the underlying satisfaction mechanisms to find a balance." Through professional means of data analysis and the construction of visualization solutions, project team members strive to find a balance between preserving urban memory, historical context, and urban development.
In-depth interview, exploring the smart support behind urban renewal
In addition to historical retrospectives guided by theoretical analysis, survey analysis, and case comparisons, the project team also conducted a significant number of in-depth interviews to comprehensively study the history and culture, business activities, and cultural events of the North Bund, uncovering the historical and cultural connotations contained in "One River, One Bank" along with the policy support behind it. "The combination of statistical, economic, and urban renewal theories and methods is well achieved, demonstrating good innovation in methodology and providing valuable practical reference in the conclusions," commented a professor from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Tongji University on the project team's results.
In the research on the cultural construction of the North Bund, the in-depth study and efforts of the "Cultural Construction Research of the North Bund - Discussing the Update Issues of Shanghai's Lilang Neighborhood" project group have provided important references for the historical and cultural preservation and future development of the North Bund. "We hope that through research, we can deepen the public's understanding and recognition of the historical culture of the North Bund, inspiring love and attention for this land. With everyone's joint efforts, we aim to create a vibrant urban cultural area that is based on historical context and embraces the people," the project leader summarized.
